Beirut, pearl of the Mediterranean

Beirut, the “Paris of the Middle East”

The Lebanese capital is also called the “Paris of the Middle East”, because of its European architecture and a multitude of sidewalk cafés, especially in the historical center. There are cafés as well as restaurants and European luxury brand shops in the city center. Bear in mind that Lebanon was a French protectorate until 1943.
Today, Beirut has regained its position as historical, cultural and intellectual city of the Middle East, whose history goes back to more than 5000 years. So take off to discover the city's many museums: the National Museum, the Sursock Museum, the AUB Archeological Museum as well as the Matignon Art Gallery, dedicated to modern art, etc.
There are also many parks and squares that are worth the visit, such as Nejmah (Star) Square in the city center and Sanayé Park or the Herbal Garden.
Beirut is also known for its intense night life with many night clubs, bars, restaurants.
Travel to Beirut: practical information
Air France lands in Beirut at the Rafik-Hariri International Airport, located 7 km south of the city. There are no shuttles to downtown; however, there are many taxis. Although there is bus service, the best way to discover Beirut is by foot since the city center is quite compact.
To enter Lebanon, Canadian citizens need a passport that is valid for at least six months after the expected date of departure from Lebanon and a visa that is valid for at least the length of your stay.
The currency in Lebanon is the Lebanese pound. Major credit cards and US dollars are often accepted and there are many ATMs.
