Discover Belgrade, capital of the Balkans, in Europe
Why not purchase a ticket to Belgrade? The capital of Serbia is one of the oldest cities in Europe. With a population of over 1.7 million, Belgrade is located where the Sava River joins the famous Danube River. The geographic location gave the city the nicknames of the “Gateway to the Balkans”, or the “Gateway to Central Europe”.
Belgrade has an altitude of 117 m, and a temperate continental climate. Therefore, you can visit in any season. If you leave from Montreal, Toronto, or any other large Canadian city with Air France, you should plan on a thirteen-hour flight, with a stopover in Paris or Amsterdam. There is a six-hour time difference between Montreal and Belgrade, and nine-hour time difference between Vancouver and Belgrade.
We offer daily flights. However, you may want to call on one of our partners if you would like to reserve a hotel room or rent a car when you arrive. If you do wish to rent a car, we recommend having an international driver's license.
If you take a taxi, know that the local currency is the new Serbian dinar (RSD). There are many ATMs and major credit cards are often accepted.
Belgrade's rich history
Belgrade has a long, fascinating history. Archeological excavations show that modern Belgrade is located on Vinča which was settled five thousand years BC. During the 3rd century BC, Celtic tribes settled Singidunum. It was conquered by the Romans, then Byzantine before the Slavs returned to the city.
In 1403, Belgrade became the Serbian capital and in 1841, the capital of the Principality of Serbia. Then came the war period: first the Balkan Wars followed by both World Wars, during which Belgrade was destroyed and rebuilt. In 1945 Belgrade fell to the hands of the communists and became the capital of Yugoslavia, before becoming the capital of Serbia once again in 2006.
All of these influences are apparent in the numerous buildings that can be visited in Belgrade. You can't miss Skadarlija, the city's old Bohemian quarter, the National Museum, the National Theater of Zemun and the Nikola-Pasic square. Belgrade's history is demonstrated in varied architectural styles; Belgrade has typical central European architecture in the Zemun quarter, combined with more modern architecture in the Novi Beograd quarter, and the neo-Byzantine style (Saint Marc's Church, the Post Office in Kosokovska street).
