Niamey, Niger's capital city

Niamey is the sprawling capital city of Niger and the country's largest city with the population more than 1,5 million people, according to Niger's government's estimates. The exact date of Niamey's foundation is unknown, and until late 18th century, the city existed as a conglomerate of several villages. The pace of life in Niamey is relaxed and unhurried. The Niger River, from which the country derives its name, divides the city in two parts. The western parts of the city are largely residential and used to fall outside of Niger's state border. As a visitor, you will probably spend most of your time on the eastern banks on the Niger River – in the areas where Niamey's administrative centers and cultural landmarks are located.

Must-see of Niamey

  • One of the city's major landmarks is the Niger National Museum, which incorporates numerous themed pavilions, several botanical gardens and a zoo. You will also find a museum of vernacular architecture and a craft center here, where you can learn more about Niger's architectural and art traditions. The famous Tree of Ténéré is exhibited here, too. The latter is the legendary lonesome tree from the Ténéré desert that used to serve as a beacon to travelers.
  • The city's Small and Grand Markets are worth visiting – here, you can try luscious local produce and shop for Niamey's signature colorful pottery. If you want to learn more about Niger's arts and crafts, plan a visit to the nearby village of Boubon where pottery is made and painted by hand.
  • Walk towards the imposing Great Mosque, Niamey's definite highlight.
  • After a stroll through the city, stop by a cafe and try the traditional stews of Niger such as the Djerma stew usually prepared with chicken, rice and vegetables and seasoned with curry powder and bay leaves.
  • For a beautiful view of Niger's capital city, plan a sail trip down the Niger River at sunset.

When is the best time to visit?

The weather in Niamey is extremely hot throughout the year, and temperatures here rarely drop below 30 degrees Celsius. During the hottest months – March, April and May – it is normal for temperatures to go above 40 degrees Celsius. The rainy season falls between June and September – and the end of rainy days is marked by traditional festivals and celebrations.
