What are some of the best things to do in Lyon?
- It wouldn't be an exaggeration to call Lyon the culinary capital of France. Follow the advice of Stendhal and eat your way through the city. Plan a dinner at one of Lyon's distinguished Michelin-star restaurants or head to one of its cozy bouchons. The bouchons are traditional restaurants, offering deliciously prepared comfort food.
- Stroll the cobbled streets of the Old Town and discover the secret passageways, once used by silk traders. Looking like an epitome of the medieval city and constructed back when the town was a rich silk-making center, Lyon's Old Town is replete with time-honored, pastel-hued stone buildings and family-run restaurants. The highlight of Vieux Lyon is the Cathedral of St.-Jean-Baptiste. The facade of the cathedral is decorated with 25 gargoyles, 36 statues of prophets and patriarchs, 36 martyrs and saints and 72 angels.
- Discover the city's markets. At the Marché St.-Antoine, it is always lively and crowded. Buy ripe cheese, baked bread, and try the roasted chicken and oysters. After an indulgent stroll through the market, head to the river banks for some book shopping – traditionally, outdoor book dealers place their stalls at the nearby Quai de la Pêcherie.
