Once you have purchased your plane ticket to Italy, make sure that you have a passport that is valid at least three months beyond the expected date of departure from that country. As a tourist, you do not need a visa for stays less than 90 days. The period begins when you enter the country in the Schengen area, which has 26 member countries that act like a single country for international travel purposes. However, if you purchase a flight for Italy as a student or for business, you will need a visa.
